This year's surveys have been processed--thank you for your participation. The collected information will be helpful as Learning Connection becomes responsible for overseeing Guides by Julie.

Guides by Julie 2010-2011 Survey Results

Summer 2011

Guides by Julie began in the fall of 2007, my freshman year. And now, in the summer of 2011, I have completed my senior year of high school. In these four years, Guides by Julie has expanded to providing approximately 250 study guides across the subject areas, which have been viewed over 1.8 million times, by people from around the world.

I will no longer be writing and publishing guides for Guides by Julie, but the existing guides will remain available in the archives. If you are a local reader, questions may be directed to the Learning Connection Committee in future, which will oversee the blog. The committee head for 2011-2012 will be Holly K.

From maintaining Guides by Julie, I have discovered that the story of one person making a difference is not an abstract myth, but instead a personal reality. But of course, this project would not have been possible without the support of many other people, who have been with me the whole way through: volunteers, advisors, and readers alike. Thank you, thank you.

IB Chemistry (Mrs. Atkins) - There is a test on quantitative chemistry. Turn in worksheets on this date.

IB Chemistry (Mrs. Atkins) and IB Biology III/IV (Mrs. Bidwell) - ALL INTERNAL ASSESSMENT IS DUE.
IB English IV (Mrs. Peteranecz) - There is a mini in-class commentary on pages 1-86 of Beloved.

IB Chem, Treatment of Error and Uncertainty

Note: when finding the line of the best fit to extrapolate your initial temperature (T0), eliminate the initial points where the thermometer was still increasing in heat.

For example, if at 15 seconds, your temperature is 22.8 degrees, at 23.0 degrees at 30 seconds, then begins to level off at 23.2 degrees, do not consider the first two points (this is when the mercury is still slowly moving up to the actual temperature of the solution). Explain this in your lab.

Finding error for extrapolating the initial temperature:

1. For the data set that you just found the line of best fit for, let us say that the first point (that you considered in your line) is (x,y) and the last point is (x1, y1).
2. You will be making two lines, finding the slope and y-intercept of each:
3. Line 1: Using the points (x, y + uncertainty) and (x1, y1 - uncertainty), find the slope and y-intercept.
4. Line 2: Using the points (x, y - uncertainty) and (x1, y1 + uncertainty), find the slope and y-intercept.
5. Find the difference of the two y-intercepts and divide by 2.

Since the thermometers used measured to the nearest degree, the uncertainty of the measured temperatures are +/- 0.5 degrees Celsius.

The AMC math competition, held at UWF, is this Wednesday, the 23rd. Attendance is free and lunch is provided by UWF to all competitors--if you are interested, contact Mrs. Li.

Several important due dates on the horizon for seniors:

World Literature Papers must be submitted by February 1, following the manuscript requirements as distributed by Mrs. Gordon. They must be submitted electronically to turnitin.com by February 21. If anyone needs the submissions guidelines, click here.
The next draft [as close to final as possible] for the TOK Essay is due on February 7.
The History IA rough draft is due on February 11.
