Summer 2011

Guides by Julie began in the fall of 2007, my freshman year. And now, in the summer of 2011, I have completed my senior year of high school. In these four years, Guides by Julie has expanded to providing approximately 250 study guides across the subject areas, which have been viewed over 1.8 million times, by people from around the world.

I will no longer be writing and publishing guides for Guides by Julie, but the existing guides will remain available in the archives. If you are a local reader, questions may be directed to the Learning Connection Committee in future, which will oversee the blog. The committee head for 2011-2012 will be Holly K.

From maintaining Guides by Julie, I have discovered that the story of one person making a difference is not an abstract myth, but instead a personal reality. But of course, this project would not have been possible without the support of many other people, who have been with me the whole way through: volunteers, advisors, and readers alike. Thank you, thank you.

Note: when finding the line of the best fit to extrapolate your initial temperature (T0), eliminate the initial points where the thermometer was still increasing in heat.

For example, if at 15 seconds, your temperature is 22.8 degrees, at 23.0 degrees at 30 seconds, then begins to level off at 23.2 degrees, do not consider the first two points (this is when the mercury is still slowly moving up to the actual temperature of the solution). Explain this in your lab.

Finding error for extrapolating the initial temperature:

For the data set that you just found the line of best fit for, let us say that the first point (that you considered in your line) is (x,y) and the last point is (x1, y1).
You will be making two lines, finding the slope and y-intercept of each:
Line 1: Using the points (x, y + uncertainty) and (x1, y1 - uncertainty), find the slope and y-intercept.
Line 2: Using the points (x, y - uncertainty) and (x1, y1 + uncertainty), find the slope and y-intercept.
Find the difference of the two y-intercepts and divide by 2.

Since the thermometers used measured to the nearest degree, the uncertainty of the measured temperatures are +/- 0.5 degrees Celsius.

It's time for our two weeks of vacation to come to an end...at least it was great while it lasted.

Learning Connection is hosting a Study Skills Session: Exam Version on Wednesday, after school in the Media Center.

School will resume as usual tomorrow, with exams beginning next week. The 5th period exam will take place on Tuesday in the time slot for 4th and 5th period. Wednesday: 1st/2nd, Thursday: 3rd/4th. Friday: 6th/7th. Dismissal is at 12:00 p.m. from Wednesday through Friday.

IB Chemistry, DNA and Forensics Assignment

After reading the articles in the packet, as well as any other additional research you choose to do, write a report about the use of DNA analysis for forensic purposes. The report must be at least two pages long [double-spaced].

Be sure to address the following issues:

How is DNA evidence collected and used in forensic investigations? Explain the process.

Why can DNA evidence be used to establish (prove) the identity of people in criminal and/or civil cases?

How reliable is DNA evidence? What is the possibility that DNA evidence can lead to erroneous information or conclusions (i.e. O.J. Simpson case)?

Suppose that a person convicted of a crime has been exonerated with DNA evidence--should they be released immediately? Should DNA evidence be a requirement for conviction in a capital murder case?

I believe we have some freedom to adjust the focus of our report. The purpose of the assignment is to approach chemistry from a Theory of Knowledge perspective.
